Onions! How Weird!

I'm just curious. When you cut onions do you cry? I mean not because you are happy or sad, but because the odor burns your eyes. I rarely ever cry "over onions"!
One of my sisters and I have done an interesting experiment with onions. Well, at least we were amused with it. I'll tell you about it...later this week.
But first, please do tell...do you cry "over onions"?

I don't. I use a really sharp knife and it doesn't "crush" the onion as I cut it so it doesn't make me cry. Mom always told us to hold a piece of break in our mouth while we were cutting it. I don't remember if that works or not.

Yes, yes, yes.

Every stinkin' time. Not only do I cry but my nose starts to run so I have to stop the chopping and blow my nose and wipe my eyes. And I've done every suggestion out there, nothing works!!

Rarely ever do I have trouble with onions. I cut fisrt the top of the onion and leave the root to last. Not sure that helps because when I do cry, I have also cut the onion that way.

It depends on the onion!
I have tried the bread in your mouth, holding a wooden match between your teeth, and leaving the root end on the onion while chopping. They didn't work, but I have found that if I only breath through my mouth, I don't cry! But then, I have started cooking with sweet onions only so maybe that helps!
Blessings!

Not only do I cry but it is very painful too! Sometimes crying makes you feel better but not a cry from onions :-)

I cry a little, but the worst part for me is the stinging. Sometimes its so bad, I have to leave the room to recover!!!

Don't cry with onions from the store (not fresh) but BOY OH BOY when I cut the ones from our garden, it's not a pretty sight. Even people in the next room are crying! Maybe freshness is the issue?!? Dunno!

I cry. I cry when I am in the other room and they are being cut. I cry when I open the fridge and there is one that has been recently cut. I have heard some methods to reduce or not have crying. One is to freeze the onion before cutting (for 30 minutes or so), another method is to keep them refridgerated until you are ready to cut them, and food networks best advice is to use a sharp knife. I believe that it is gas moulecules from the onion that are being released when they are being cut that interacts with the moisture and sensitive tissue of the eye. My step mom has hard contacts and see says that when she wearing her contacts she doesn't cry.

Oh, I cry if I'm not wearing my contacts! But I've also learned a little trick that has worked for me: lighting a candle next to where I'm cutting the onion.

I am finding it might depend on the onion. Yellow onions seem to be worse and white and sweet onions aren't as bad... I have also heard about cutting the root end last... but I usually forget! =O/

Oh, yes, I cry! It must be a very joyful occasion! :)

I love onions and love to cook with onions, but I hate to cut them for I cry, cry, cry! Please tell me how not to. I've tried everything!

I don't know if anyone else has this experience, but if I have my contacts in I never cry.....if I don't....big time weeping! Have you seen the new pink glasses for peeling onions? No more tears. :-)

Warm Blessings,
Spencer

Interesting question. It depends on the onion I think. The large sweet Vidalia onions (excuse the spelling if it is wrong) don't make my eyes water..but some of the small ones actually HURT and force me outdoors to recoup. :)
Thanks my story, and I'm stickin' to it!
If you have a hint, I am anxious to hear it. I have heard many over the years and am always interested if there is a new way to dodge this misery.
This Christmas I dumped them in the food processor when I made the deviled eggs.

It's just a good reason to cry if you need one!

I do cry when I cut most onions. Some people say to put them in cold water before you cut them and then it doesn't happen - haven't tried it yet though. My daughter once wore swimming goggles when she cut the onions so she wouldn't cry.. it did have me crying with laughter though .. she looked so funny

Oh YES!! I cry....only because I hate to see something hurt!! You know it has to hurt with a knife going through you!!! Hehehe...I know...not quite the answer you were looking for!!

I don't cry with sweet onions...I use the 1015. The ones from my garden make me cry and they are bulb onions!

Have a creative day!

YES, I weep! And not just if I am cutting them, but if anyone anywhere near me is cutting them, even a couple rooms over! It is quite a handicap since I love fried onions!
